Our Principal's Message
Greetings WECHS School Family,
Warren Early College High School is among a growing cohort of the most successful and innovative secondary schools in the State of North Carolina – Early College High Schools. Located on the beautiful Warren Campus of Vance-Granville Community College, WECHS was established in 2008 under the auspices of Governor Mike Easley’s Learn and Earn Initiative, The North Carolina New Schools Project, and The Golden LEAF Foundation.
WECHS provides students with a unique learning environment that offers motivated students the opportunity to attend college while working towards high school graduation. Our school is a five-year program. Students begin in the ninth grade and take a combination of high school and college courses throughout their academic tenure at WECHS. At the end of their fifth year of study, students can graduate with both a high school diploma and either an Associate’s Degree or two years of transferable college credit.
All Early College High Schools share a set of expectations and effective practices that are captured by five essential Design Principles:
Ready for College: WECHS has a pervasive, transparent and consistent understanding that our school exists to prepare students for college, careers, and life. We maintain a common set of high standards for every graduate to eliminate the harmful consequences of tracking and sorting students.
Powerful Teaching and Learning: WECHS shares common standards with other Early College High Schools for high quality teaching. Teachers design rigorous instruction that ensures the development of the critical thinking, application, and problem-solving skills often neglected in traditional settings.
Personalization: We believe that knowing students well is essential to helping them achieve academically.
Redefined Professionalism: The responsibility to the shared vision of WECHS is evident in the collaborative, creative, and leadership roles of all staff in the school. Our staff members take responsibility for the success of every student, hold themselves accountable to their colleagues, and are reflective about their roles.
Purposeful Design: WECHS was designed deliberately to create the conditions that ensure the other four Design Principles. The organization of time and space and the allocation of resources ensures that best practices become common practice.
WECHS is a school for dedicated students who are looking for a fast track toward college education, and our students must commit to behaviors that lead to success. Supportive relationships, high expectations, enhanced opportunities, and hard work lead to bright futures for all WECHS students. At Warren Early College High School we are preparing scholars and leaders of tomorrow . . . today!
