Students participate in Mariam Boyd’s annual Black History Month Program

February 14, 2020

On Thursday, February 13th Mariam Boyd Elementary hosted its annual Black History Month Program for  Pre-k through 5th grades. Parents and community members attended the program which consisted of poems, songs, important historical notes, and a “Mystery Guest” identity game in which 4th and 5th grade students portrayed famous African Americans.

February marks Black History Month as a “tribute to African American men and women who have made significant contributions to America and the rest of the world in the fields of science, politics, law, sports, the arts, entertainment, and many others.”  While Black History Month is often identified as “synonymous” with prominent figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman, there are countless other African Americans who've made a profound impact in history. Throughout the month of February and beyond, Mariam Boyd students celebrate all African Americans and engage in curricular activities that outline the importance of Black History month and the many people who have made and continue to make important contributions to society today.

As the program comes to a close,  Mariam Boyd thanks all those who attended the program, as  well as the students and staff who worked so hard to make the program a reality.
