Updated April 25, 2024

Staff presented revised 2024-25 school calendar options to the Board of Education during their meeting on April 23, 2024. The changes were based on feedback from students, parents, teachers, staff, and other folks who live in Warren County. We want to sincerely thank the 264 people who had already provided feedback on the proposed calendars as of Thursday, April 25. And we’re thrilled to see that most of the feedback is from students!

Because of that feedback, we made some changes to teacher workdays, early release days, and wellness days.

The Board of Education is planning to vote on the calendars at their next meeting on Tuesday, May 14.

Draft calendars

Survey

Please review the revised draft calendars and complete this survey by noon on Friday, May 10, 2024. www.warrenk12nc.org/CalendarSurvey

Options - Warren County Middle School

  • Option 1 - WCMS uses the secondary schools calendar

  • Option 2 - WCMS uses the elementary schools calendar

The biggest change involves the middle school. Based on teacher and staff feedback, there’s an option for the middle school to be on the elementary school calendar instead of the high school calendar. There’s also still the option of keeping the middle school on the high school calendar.

Clarification about Wellness Days / Wellness Wednesdays

We also want to clarify the changes to Wellness Wednesdays in next year’s calendars. They’re not going away. They’re just changing a bit. Based on staff feedback, the wellness days won’t always be on Wednesdays next year. In fact, we tried to put them on Fridays whenever possible to give staff a bigger mental health break, leading into the weekend. So we’re just calling it a “Wellness Day.”

Next school year, Wellness Days are a half teacher workday for staff, where they’ll have required professional development in the morning. Then the afternoon is a Wellness Day for staff to do whatever they need to do. Students get the entire day off for Wellness Days next year, so it’s just marked as a teacher workday on the student calendars. We hope students will spend the entire day taking care of their social, emotional, mental, and physical health.

Important Notes

  • Warren County High is on an earlier calendar than the elementary schools to allow secondary students to take end of course exams before the long winter break. This calendar flexibility is allowed under the state's Restart program to improve academic performance.

  • The calendar for Warren Early College High School must mirror the calendar for Vance-Granville Community College, since students are also enrolled in college courses.

  • We must meet all requirements under the state's school calendar law and the Department of Public Instruction's requirements for how long students must be in school and how many days employees must work.

School Calendars must meet the following requirements

  1. Start date no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end date no later than the Friday closest to June 11 (unless a weather-related calendar waiver has been approved, year-round school, charter school or cooperative innovative high school.) If waiver is approved the start date can be no earlier than the Monday closest to August 19.

  2. There are no educational purpose waivers for exemption of the opening and/or closing dates.

  3. All schools within the district must be closed all day for purposes of determining eligibility for a weather-related waiver (delayed starts or early dismissals of two or more hours no longer apply).

  4. Covers at least nine calendar months.

  5. Must have a minimum of 185 days OR 1,025 hours of instruction.

  6. Must have at least nine (9) teacher workdays.

  7. Local Boards shall designate two (2) workdays on which teachers may take accumulated vacation leave. Local Boards may designate the remaining workdays as days teachers may take accumulated vacation leave.

  8. Have a minimum of ten (10) annual vacation leave days.

  9. Have the same or an equivalent number of legal holidays occurring within the school calendar as those designated by the State Personnel Commission for State employees.

  10. School shall not be held on Sunday.

  11. Veterans Day shall be a holiday for all public-school personnel and for all students enrolled in the public schools.
