A Day in the Life of a Distance Learner

The end of the school year is a time that generally brings excitement, fun, and celebration for Mariam Boyd 5th Grade Students. This time of year is filled with events such as Field Day, 5th Grade graduation, and other end of the year activities. Unfortunately for all of our Mariam Boyd Eagles, this school year looks differently. With the COVID-19 Pandemic in full swing, students have transitioned to distance learning at home, meeting with teachers and classmates via Zoom, phone calls, and texts. End of the year events have been cancelled or postponed, and students will not partake in many of the activities they look so forward to all year.

Despite these grim changes, Mariam Boyd students are working to stay motivated and end the year on a high note. We stopped in to chat with Mariam Boyd fifth grader, Austin Silver, an Eagle Honor Award recipient and rising 6th grader, to discuss his transition into distance learning.

  1. What is your daily schedule during Distance Learning?

I wake up, eat breakfast, and start on my school work. I take a snack break and do a little more work. I then have lunch and finish my lessons for the day. In the evening, I have free time and I usually go fishing at the pond or lake, go outside to play, or play my game.

2. What has been the most challenging part of school being closed?

Having to learn on my own without my teachers. I’m also going to miss finishing 5th grade because we miss out on our last field day, awards day, and our promotion to 5th grade.

3. What has been the most enjoyable aspect of being home from school?

Getting to spend more time with family and doing things when I want to.

4. What do you miss most about being in school?

I miss my teachers and friends/classmates.

5. What lessons do you think that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught you?

Enjoy life everyday, and that family is always first. If you’re sick, stay home so you don’t infect other people.

Mariam Boyd is so proud of Austin and all of our Eagles for continuing their efforts to learn despite the challenges we are currently facing. We know that you will continue to see success, and we wish all of our rising 6th Grade Eagles the best of luck in the 2020-2021 School Year! You will always have a home at Mariam Boyd!
