
On this day in 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler becomes the first African-American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States.

We love Mrs. Joseph’s “six word story” in honor of Black History Month 2021!


Throughout February, our students, faculty and administration are crafting “six word stories” in honor of Black History Month.





She became one of the 20th Century’s most influential jurists. On Feb. 23, 1965, Constance Baker Motley is voted Manhattan Borough president, the highest elective office held by an African-American woman in a major U.S. city until that time. As noted below, this is but one of the many “firsts” achieved by this remarkable scholar!


On this day in 1979, Frank E. Peterson, Jr., the first African-American aviator in our United States Marine Corps, also becomes its first African-American general. In 1998, he penned his autobiography, Into the Tiger’s Jaw, and in 2010 was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy’s Board of Visitors.


Just a reminder to all JUNIORS that the state of NC requires participation in the ACT, which will be administered in person, free of charge, here at New Tech next Tues., Feb. 23. All social distancing protocols will be in effect, and students need to arrive no later than 8 AM.
While the ACT is a paper and pencil exam, students will need to bring their school-issued Chromebooks to access information that must be completed on the test.

On this day in 1942, the Tuskegee Airmen become part of the Armed Forces - the first African-American flying unit in the United States military, ultimately engaging in over 1,500 missions and earning more than 850 medals in defense of our nation.


Can’t wait to begin sharing these new yard signs, slated to arrive in short order, with our standout Students of the Month!


Toni Morrison, the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize for literature, was born this day in 1931; here, she is shown as President Barack Obama presents her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor, in 2012.


Just a reminder to all students currently enrolled in English 2 and/or biology of your upcoming benchmark tests. The virtual English 2 test is slated for next Monday, February 22, and the biology test, also rendered virtually, is on Thursday, February 25. Best wishes to our Knights!



Attention, Juniors!
As you know, the state of NC requires all juniors to take the ACT, which will be administered free-of-charge here on campus next Tuesday, February 23. Students should arrive at school no later than 8:00 am; all social distancing protocols will be in place. Wishing the Class of 2022 the very best on this important exam!

As you know, your virtual Math 1 benchmark test is slated for next Wednesday, February 24. Packets including your test code and ancillary test materials may be picked up here in the main office through noon Friday. Best wishes on this important exam!


Although he did not make his high school varsity squad as a sophomore, Michael Jordan, born this day in 1963, went on to become one of basketball’s greatest. A successful businessman now the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, he just pledged $10 million to open two new medical clinics near his Wilmington, NC hometown.

On this day in 1968, Henry Lewis becomes the first African-American to lead a symphony orchestra in the United States. A child prodigy, he was also the first African-American instrumentalist in a major American symphony orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which he joined at the age of sixteen in 1948.


On February 12, 1909, the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is founded in an organizational meeting in New York City.
