Mariam Boyd ES 5th Grade Parent Survey: Transition to Warren County Middle School The Warren County Schools Board of Education is seeking input from all current Mariam Boyd 5th grade parents. Based on a recent facility study, the Board is considering the possibility of transferring the Northside 6th-8th grade students to Warren County Middle school starting August 2021. This effort will be a cost-saving to the district and allow us to increase more programs and opportunities for students, such as STEM. February 12, 2021 Dear Parent/Guardian, Thank you for your continued dedication and patience during this unique time. Now that your child has reached the third grade milestone, you may have noticed a concentrated focus on ensuring students are reading proficiently, at or above grade level, as well as close attention to documented student progress aligned to comprehension, integration, and application of complex texts needed for secondary education and career success. Normally at the beginning of grade 3 students take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 Reading Test (BOG3); however with COVID this school year the test has been delayed. The U.S. Department of Education’s Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, shared there will not be a waiver from testing for this school year. Students who are receiving instruction are expected to take the appropriate assessments. The BOG3 test is required to be administered in person. Your child’s testing session will be administered on February 23, 2021 with makeups on February 24th and 25th. As part of the Read to Achieve law (G.S. §115C-83.1) passed by the General Assembly in 2012, your child will be taking the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of beginning third-grade reading skills. If your child scores achievement level 3 or higher on the BOG3 Test, the score will satisfy the promotion requirements of the Read to Achieve Legislation. Following the BOG3 Test administration, you will receive an individual student report with your child's score. As you review the report, make notes about your child’s test score and other questions you may have. Be sure to discuss your questions with your child's teacher as needed. At the end of third grade, your child will take the End-of-Grade (EOG) tests in Reading and Mathematics. The Read to Achieve law has processes in place for third graders who do not score at a proficient level on the BOG3 test or EOG test in reading: 1. Your child will have the opportunity to take the Grade 3 Reading EOG Retest, the Read to Achieve Test, or the locally-approved alternative test. These tests provide your child with other opportunities to demonstrate proficiency. 2. If your child is not proficient on the Retest, the Read to Achieve Test, or the locally-approved alternative test, an option to attend a reading camp to help improve reading skills is available. This camp is at no charge to you. Your local school district will organize the camp and give you more information about when and where it will be held. 3. At the end of reading camp, your child may achieve reading proficiency by passing the Read to Achieve Test, having successfully completed a student reading portfolio, or by passing the locally-approved alternative test approved by the State Board of Education. Students achieving proficiency on one of these measures are eligible to be promoted to fourth grade. Students who do not attend the reading camp are still provided the opportunity to take the Read to Achieve Test or the locally-approved alternative test on a designated day following the completion of the reading camp. 4. Students who do not achieve proficiency at the end of reading camp, can be retained in third grade, placed in a 3/4 transitional class with a retained reading label, or placed in a fourth-grade accelerated reading class with a retained reading label. Ninety minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction is provided daily in these classes. Children in the 3/4 transitional classes or fourth-grade accelerated classes are eligible to retake the Read to Achieve Test again in late October to achieve a mid-year promotion and to have the retained reading label removed. Children will remain in the same fourth-grade class for the entire school year and will continue to receive the uninterrupted reading instruction throughout fourth grade to support ongoing improvement in reading skills. Non-proficient students may continue to work on completing a portfolio or passing a local alternative test after November 1 to show proficiency by the end of the fourth-grade year and have the retained reading label removed. In order for student access to be equitable across the board and to have reliable and valid data, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has mandated that these state assessments cannot occur remotely. Therefore, our students who are receiving instruction remotely will go to their schools to take these tests. We understand that you may be concerned about the safety of your students when returning to the school building to take a test. To ensure this is a safe environment for our students, we will ensure health and safety requirements are in place. Warren County Schools is taking the following precautions per CDC Guidelines: • Test sites with no more than 10 examinees • Social distancing within the building • Temperature checks and COVID-19 screening questions upon arrival • Masks required by staff and students • Sanitizing stations • Test sites will be sanitized before and after testing • Air purifiers will be placed in classrooms and/or windows opened for improved ventilation Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students. Transportation will not be provided; therefore parents or guardians will need to bring students to the designated school for testing. This school year is like no other, and it is especially important to have test scores that will show you how your student is doing academically. Test scores, combined with other factors, will help you and your student’s teacher to make the best decisions for future learning. In Warren County Schools, we want to make sure we provide each student the opportunity to learn and grow academically during this school year.
