We are proud to celebrate sophomore scholars Shaira Saldo and Tanyha Ariaz-Betancourt, who participated this past Saturday in NC State University’s 15th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day! 📊✨

Held in SAS Hall at NC State, this special event gave girls in grades 6–12 the opportunity to engage in hands-on math activities, meet mathematicians and college students, and explore how math connects to real careers and everyday life.

Sonia Kovalevsky Day honors the legacy of a trailblazing woman in mathematics while creating a fun, supportive space that encourages girls to explore and excel in math. We are so proud of Shaira and Tanyha for taking part in this meaningful experience and representing WECHS so well! 💙💛

🏛️ Learning Beyond the Classroom! 🏛️

Mr. Moguel, Mrs. Bender, and our 10th-grade Civics scholars recently traveled to the Halifax Historic District for an immersive, hands-on history experience—and what a day it was!

Throughout the day, our scholars explored historic site buildings, visited a Continental Army camp, and experienced living history demonstrations like hearth cooking and blacksmithing at the Bradford-Denton House. They also toured the Royal White-Hart Masonic Lodge No. 2, the Edward Cheek House, and even took part in self-guided exploration of the Underground Railroad Trail.

Scholars engaged in powerful learning opportunities, including:
📚 A history presentation on the origins of the “Tar Heel” identity
🎶 A live musical performance by the Syllabub Trio
📖 A presentation highlighting Free People of Color and their contributions as patriots
💥 An exciting musket-firing demonstration on Market Square

This experience brought history to life, allowing our scholars to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. We are so proud of how they represented WECHS!

🎓✨ Celebrating History & Inspiring Futures! ✨🎓

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Warren County Shaw University Alumni, led by Ms. Shrounda Riddick, for their generous donation of Shaw University pennant flags to our school! ❤️🤍

Founded on December 1, 1865, Shaw University in Raleigh holds the distinguished honor of being the first HBCU in the South, established to provide educational opportunities to freedmen following the Civil War.

This meaningful contribution helps increase awareness of HBCU history while inspiring our scholars to explore the many pathways available to them after graduation.

📣 The challenge is on! The Shaw University Alumni invite our community to represent your college or university by donating pennant flags to WECHS and WCHS—help us expose our scholars to a world of possibilities!

Thank you again for your support and investment in our scholars’ futures!

Although we weren’t able to celebrate on March 14, our Pi Day celebration yesterday was absolutely worth the wait! 🥧✨ Our scholars and staff enjoyed a day filled with math enrichment, problem-solving, learning, fun, and prizes! From scholar-led stations like a Math Escape Room, creating a Pi Chain, and a competitive Blooket challenge, engagement was high and excitement was even higher! 🔢🎉 Our staff had the tough job of judging a delicious pie tasting contest (a sweet highlight of the day! 😋), and we wrapped everything up with a schoolwide kickball game—soaking up the sunshine and enjoying time together before a well-deserved Spring Break #2. ☀️⚽ A huge shoutout to Dr. Acela Recentes and our Math Club for their incredible planning and dedication in making this event a success! 👏🏽 And a very special thank you to Araceli Recentes, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly—your hard work truly made a difference! 💙 What a wonderful way to kick off our break!

🧪✨ Hands-On Chemistry in Action! ✨🧪

Mrs. Eaton’s Chemistry Honors scholars put their learning to the test during a Baking Soda and Vinegar Stoichiometry Lab!

Using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and acetic acid (vinegar), scholars conducted a chemical reaction to produce sodium acetate—a compound commonly used as a food preservative. 🧂🔬

This lab gave students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of stoichiometry, chemical equations, and percent error in a real-world, hands-on way. From measuring reactants to analyzing their results, our scholars were fully engaged in the scientific process!

We love seeing our scholars think critically, collaborate, and bring chemistry to life! 💡👏

📢 Exciting News! 📢 Mr. Moguel and our scholars have arrived in Raleigh and have successfully completed Day 1 of the Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA)! 🎉 YLA is a hands-on experience where high school students step into the world of government, debating and voting on real issues that impact our communities. This conference helps build confidence, sharpen debate skills, and gives students a deeper understanding of how local, state, and national government works. Our scholars had a great first day learning, collaborating, and engaging in the legislative process. We are incredibly proud of how they are representing Warren County Schools! 💡 Did you know? Any high school student in North Carolina can participate—public, private, charter, or homeschool! No sponsorship from an NC General Assembly member is required—just submit an application. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the weekend holds! 🎤🏛️

Today was a day filled with learning, fellowship, and fun! Our WECHS scholars, families, and staff traveled to Washington, D.C. to explore the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, and it was an amazing experience! Two charter buses full of our school community enjoyed a day of discovery, followed by lunch and a little afternoon shopping. I couldn’t be prouder of how well our scholars represented our school and Warren County. What a fantastic way to start Spring Break! 🌸
